Education is one important aspect in life. This aspect is expected to be the intellectual life of the nation. But education should not be separated from religious teachings. Advances in technology and globalization are rapidly becoming also increasingly widening gap between science and religion. Therefore the role of Islamic universities have particular significance. As a center of excellence, higher education institutions of Islam is intended to synergize these two aspects.
One of the colleges responding to the challenge of Islam that era is State Institute of Islamic Sunan Gunung Djati (IAIN SGD). The trick is to develop itself into the State Islamic University (UIN).
According to the Rector of IAIN SGD, Prof. Dr. H. Nanat Fatah Natsir, MS., The development of a UIN IAIN indispensable to the era of globalization. IAIN therefore should not be solely confined to religious education. These institutions must develop itself on universal education. With globalization, competition is even more strict. It is a fact that must be faced. Later, IAIN graduates should be able to compete with foreign graduates. Changes like this need to be done, said Nanat.
He added: SGD IAIN steps to develop themselves into UIN based Education Law number 20 year 2003. Education Act is intended to develop students' potential, enhancing human intelligence and realize that faithful and obedient. Conditions were perfect with UIN education model which is an integration of religion and science.

IAIN changes become UIN is also needed to improve Indonesia's education system is still considered dichotomous. So far, our education system is still split between science and religion. That's the correct religion to guide science. People are smart in a science does not necessarily persuaded to leave the religion. Science and religion should be in line, said Nanat.
Nanat asserted, UIN SGD different public universities (PTU). UIN SGD Bandung will carry out two missions at once. Namely to become an institution growing place of religious sciences and general sciences.
To stimulate higher levels of development and can meet the expectations of various parties, required institutional development of the IAIN from the institute into the University. University which will consist of several faculty will conduct academic training and / or professionals in a number of disciplines in accordance with applicable regulations. The goal is to print out graduates who have academic ability and professional with a foundation of indigo-Islamic values. UIN graduates expected to disseminate the Islamic religious sciences and other disciplines to improve the standard of living and enrich the national culture.
IAIN SGD founded on April 8, 1968 continues to make improvements themselves. IAIN now has five faculties: the Faculty of Adab, Da'wah, Sharia, Tarbiah, and Usul al-Din. The five faculties will be added to the eight faculties at the first stage development of the IAIN a UIN. While in the second phase will be added one more to nine faculties.
We at IAIN already preparing additional faculty if it later has become a UIN. There are some who still majoring in IAIN shape, but if it has been turned into a UIN will be the faculty, he said.
Eight faculty who will be added at the first stage is the Adab and Humanities Faculty, Da'wa and Communication, Sharia and Law, Tarbiah and Teaching, Usul al-Din and Philosophy, Psychology, Social Science and Economics and Science and Technology. Whereas in the second stage, will be added faculty of medicine.
Nanat added, IAIN also opened graduate programs and doctoral programs. S2 program has a concentration on the study of the Quran, Hadith, Aqidah and Islamic Thought, Islamic Education, Islamic society, economics and Arabic.
Concerning the teaching staff, Nanat admitted to not worry. IAIN lecturers addition, he confessed to recruit professors from various universities such as Universitas Padjadjaran, UI, IPB, ITB STPDN and as educators for new faculty will be established. Currently, IAIN has 652 permanent lecturers. This amount consisted of 19 women professors, 50 doctoral, 279 masters and 323 people one person strata. For teaching and learning process (PMB) UIN SGD Bandung carried out using the curriculum and the Department of Religion Department of Education which is supported by the Model Mahad Aly.
This method, according Nanat, will implement a new system of boarding schools for students from all faculties for one year. Later, students will live in a dorm and get 24 hours of instruction and monitoring. The purpose of this boarding school for Islamic aqidah thicken. Although faculty selected is common knowledge, but they will be forged in his faith in the first year. This will be the hallmark of UIN SGD, said Nanat.
In addition to the boarding school program, students must also learn the UIN SGD mandatory language, namely Arabic and English. In fact, later making the proposed thesis uses both languages other than Indonesian. Another advantage of the learning method is a program wirausahanya UIN SGD. This program is provided so that the UIN graduates were able to open his own business field. The soul also honed their independence. So not only can register as civil servants (PNS) alone, he said.
IAIN SGD is one of the 14th IAIN spread across the entire country. There is now two and one IAIN State Islamic High School (STAIN) has changed its status to a UIN. Both are IAIN IAIN Syarif Hidayatullah (Jakarta) and IAIN Sunan Kalijaga (Yoyakarta). While STAIN Malang has changed its status to a UIN Malang. IAIN status changes UIN SGD to SGD is in the process. Just waiting for the president's decision, I Nanat.
State Islamic University Sunan Gunung Djati (UIN SGD) will apply the model learning method Mahad Aly. Unlike other university teaching methods, this method is a combination of traditional and modern elements. In the language of culture, Mahad better known as pesantren. Mahad is a method of coaching students pengasramaan or concentration of solid in the program curriculum. Coaching and educational activities held without time limit, starting from the morning, afternoon, evening, night until dawn.
The phenomenon of Islamic education model is a widespread model is identical to Mahad. The model of the pesantren or Mahad held in the college of education with the characteristic model of higher education institutions, called Mahad Aly. However, UIN SGD will not fully apply the teachings of Mahad. Because, unlike UIN SGD Mahad. Because of the design is Mahad Aly, then the method will not fully like boarding school method. These educational institutions will make synergies, integration and modification to develop a model of student learning and coaching UIN. The method is the concept of learning will dikebangkan Mahad Aly. This method will focus on Introduction to Islam (or faith) is strong and sturdy, Akhlaq noble and profound sciences.
This is manifested in the ability to read, write, and qiraat Quran and Tafseer, Hadith and the science of coaching knowledge of hadith, guidance and stabilization of Aqidah Islamiyah, the establishment and implementation of Akhlaq Karimah within and outside the college campus, as well as promoting the Arabic language capabilities. Arabic and English coaching is done by using the original reference to both languages. To add a fluent, both languages will be used as an introduction to the everyday in an environment UIN SGD.
Mahad Aly, combining the Islamic School and Modern Science
UIN SGD will start to implement teaching methods for new students Mahad Aly semester one and two. These students will be placed in a dormitory boys and girls. Each dorm is inhabited by 100 excellent student who will undergo a one-year boarding school. Mahad Aly residents later called the students students.
Fostering students, students will use two approaches. Namely, non-classical approach of traditional and modern classical approach. Traditional classical approach was conducted by sorogan, halaqah (semaan) and munadzarah (discussion). All of the boarders Mahad Aly must follow all the activities organized in Mahad Aly for one year. This is a whole series of activities that are integral to the substance of academic study.
Mahad Aly learning method is expected to support the fundamental problems that have been perceived by institutions such as Islamic universities IAIN, STAIN or UIN. This model is also expected to be an alternative model in the education system. Hopefully.
