Education is one important aspect in life. This aspect is expected to be the intellectual life of the nation. But education should not be separated from religious teachings. Advances in technology and globalization are rapidly becoming also increasingly widening gap between science and religion. Therefore the role of Islamic universities have particular significance. As a center of excellence, higher education institutions of Islam is intended to synergize these two aspects.
One of the colleges responding to the challenge of Islam that era is State Institute of Islamic Sunan Gunung Djati (IAIN SGD). The trick is to develop itself into the State Islamic University (UIN).
According to the Rector of IAIN SGD, Prof. Dr. H. Nanat Fatah Natsir, MS., The development of a UIN IAIN indispensable to the era of globalization. IAIN therefore should not be solely confined to religious education. These institutions must develop itself on universal education. With globalization, competition is even more strict. It is a fact that must be faced. Later, IAIN graduates should be able to compete with foreign graduates. Changes like this need to be done, said Nanat.
He added: SGD IAIN steps to develop themselves into UIN based Education Law number 20 year 2003. Education Act is intended to develop students' potential, enhancing human intelligence and realize that faithful and obedient.
