This period begins with the Faculty of Religious Penegerian Indonesian Islamic University (UII) to Islamic Higher Education (PTAIN) are regulated by the Presidential Regulation Number 34 Year 1950 Date August 14, 1950 and the inauguration PTAIN on September 26, 1951. In this period, there were also smelting PTAIN (established under Presidential Regulation Number 34 Year 1950) and ADIA (Minister of Religious Affairs was established under Decision No. 1 of 1957) by the issuance of Presidential Regulation No. 11 Year 1960 On May 9, 1960 on the Establishment of State Islamic Institute ( IAIN) with the name Al-Jami'ah al-Islamiya al-Hukumiyah. in this period, under the leadership PTAIN KHR Moh Adnan (1951-1959) and Prof. Dr. H. 1960-1972
Laying Period Basis
This period is characterized by IAIN inauguration on August 24, 1960. In this period, the separation of the IAIN. First, based in Yogyakarta and second, based in Jakarta based on the Religious Decree Number 49 Year 1963 Date February 25, 1963. In this period, IAIN Yogyakarta IAIN Sunan Kalijaga named based on the Ministry of Religious Affairs Number 26 Year 1965 Date of July 1, 1965. At this period has done development of educational facilities, beginning with removal of the old campus (at Jalan Simanjuntak, who is now a building MAN 1 Yogyakarta) to a new campus that is much broader (in Yogyakarta Adisucipto Marsda Road). A number of faculty building constructed in the middle and also built a mosque which is still standing strong. Education system prevailing in this period still be 'free' because the students were given the opportunity to advance the exam after they actually prepared. The curriculum materials are still referring to the Middle East curriculum (Al-Azhar University, Egypt) that have been developed during PTAIN. In this period, IAIN Sunan Kalijaga under the leadership of Prof. RHA Soenarjo, SH (1960-1972).
1972-1996
Laying period Academic Foundation
In this period, IAIN Sunan Kalijaga led successively by Colonel Drs. H. Bakri Shaheed (1972-1976), Professor. H. Zaini Dahlan, MA (during the 2nd term of office: 1976-1980 and 1980-1983), Professor. Dr. HA Mu'in Umar (1983-1992) and Prof. Dr. Simuh (1992-1996). In periodeini, physical infrastructure development includes the construction of campus buildings Da'wa Faculty, Library, Graduate School, and Rector continued. Education system that is used in this period began to shift from 'liberal system' to 'the system of guided' by introduce 'pseudo semester system' and finally 'pure semester credit system'. In terms of curriculum, IAIN Sunan Kalijaga has undergone a radical adjustment to the needs of the Indonesian national. The number of faculty has increased to 5 (five); the Faculty of Adab, Da'wah, Shariah, MT and Usul al-Din. Graduate Program of IAIN Sunan Kalijaga opened in this period, precisely in the academic year 1983/1984. Graduate Program has been initiated with the academic activities in the form of short courses on Islamic studies with a Post Graduate Course (PGC) and the Full Degree Studies (PPS) held without granting a Master's degree level. For that, the opening of the graduate program in the eighties decade has confirmed IAIN Sunan Kalijaga function as high-level academic institutions in the top-level Tier One Program.
1996-2001
Consolidation Period of Academic and Management
In this period, IAIN Sunan Kalijaga under the leadership of Prof. Dr. HM. Atho Mudzhar (1997-2001). In this period, efforts to improve academic quality, particularly quality of lecturers (lecturers) and quality of alumni, to continue. The lecturers are driven in large quantities and are given the opportunity to continue his studies, both for the level of Master (S2) and Doctoral (S3) in a variety of disciplines, both inside and outside the country. Similarly, increasing human resources for administrative staff made to improve the quality of academic management and administrative services. In this period, IAIN Sunan Kalijaga increasingly concentrating on improving academic orientation and cemented its existence as an institution of higher education. The number of workers who hold doctoral faculty and Professors increased accompanied by an increase in the number of library collections and services system.
2001-2010
Period of Institutional Development
This period can be referred to as the 'Period Trasformasi', because, in this period there has been a significant milestone in the development of the oldest Islamic institution of higher education in the homeland, that is Transforming State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Sunan Kalijaga the State Islamic University (UIN) Sunan Kalijaga based on Presidential Decree Number 50 Year 2004 Date June 21, 2004. State Islamic Declaration was held on October 14, 2004. This period under the leadership of Prof. Dr. HM. Amin Abdullah (2001-2005) with the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Drs. H. End. Minhaji, MA., Ph.D, Assistant Rector of the General Administration of Drs. H. Masyhudi, BBA, M. Si Vice Rector for Student Affairs and Professor. Dr. H. Lubis Ismail, MA (deceased) who was replaced by Dr. Maragustam Siregar, MA.
In the second period (2006-2010) from the leadership of Prof. Dr. HM. Amin Abdullah has established Cooperation Assistant Rector. With the enactment of the presence of Assistant Rector of Cooperation, the State Islamic leadership in the second period is as follows: Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Dr. H. Sukamta, MA, Assistant Rector of Public Administration, Dr. H. Tasman Hamami, MA, Vice Rector for Student Affairs, Dr. Maragustam Siregar, MA, and Assistant Rector of Cooperation chaired by Prof. Dr. H. Siswanto Masruri, MA.
Changes made to the Institute became a university launched a new paradigm in view and to study the sciences, religion and general sciences, namely the paradigm of integration of interconnection. This paradigm requires the effort to bridge dialogs openly and intensively between hadlarah an-nas, hadlarah al-ilm, and hadlarah al-philosophy. With this paradigm, State Islamic increasingly emphasized concern for the development of Muslim society in particular and the public at large. Alloying and linking the two fields of study, previously seen in dimatral different understanding of Islam allows birth of a friendly, democratic, and became rahmatan lil 'alamin.
