From the history of the institution, State University of Surabaya (Unesa) originated from the embryo of a course of integration of BI and B-II, which was in Surabaya into FKIP in 1960. Later in the year 1961 FKIP be integrated with PTPG FKIP Airlangga University in Surabaya, Malang Branch. In 1963 FKIP Airlangga integrate more with the IPG becomes IKIP. After IKIP standing, FKIP IKIP Malang Malang into and escape from Airlangga University. Furthermore, based on Decree No. 182 Year 1964 PTIP, stand IKIP Surabaya. Opening was held on December 19, 1964 at 08.00 am, at Surabaya 72-74 Kayoon road. At that time IKIP Surabaya has five faculties, namely Faculty of Education Sciences (FIP), the Teaching Faculty of Social Sciences (FKIS), Faculty of Arts Teaching Literature (FKSS), Faculty of Science Teacher Training exact sciences (FKIE), Faculty of Engineering Science Teaching (FKIT). Then again increased by one faculty, based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 042/O/1977 High School Sports (STO) to integrate into IKIP Surabaya with a Sport Science Faculty Teaching (FKIK).
Furthermore, the growth and changing its name to the Faculty of Educational Sciences (FIP), Faculty of Social Sciences (FPIPS), Faculty of Education Mathematics and Science (FPMIPA), Faculty of Education Language and Arts (FPBS), Faculty of Technical Education and Vocational (FPTK), and the Faculty of Sports and Health Education (FPOK).
Under Presidential Decree No. RI. 93 In 1999, Teachers' Training College became the State University of Surabaya, Surabaya. According to the resolution of the senate meeting on October 12, 1998, which agreed that a post-conversion Surabaya Teachers' Training College, State University of Surabaya, which is abbreviated Unesa. In English, it was agreed penyebutannya is the State University of Surabaya.
Unesa is an institution that has a dual mission which still has bases as LPTK (Institute of Education Workforce Education). Unesa still hold the primary mission, namely conducting educational programs and non-formal educational programs, so Unesa remain on duty as a producer with educators for preschool education, primary education and secondary education. According to Presidential Decree No. RI. 93 In 1999, Unesa has the task:
Based on the extension of the mandate and the changing, Unesa still has six faculties which also experienced a name change, the Faculty of Educational Sciences (FIP), Faculty of Languages and Arts (FBS), Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science (Science Faculty), Faculty of Social Sciences (FIS) , Faculty of Engineering, and Faculty of Sport Science (FIK).
In the year 2006 or seven years after conversion, Unesa opened a new faculty, Faculty of Economics. That's according to a letter issued by the Directorate General of Higher Education Faculty Opening Number 761/D/T/2006 of Economics Unesa dated February 16, 2006, and Decree No. Unesa Rector. Separation Programs 050/J37/HK.01.23/PP.03.02/2006 on Economic Education and Its Study Program of the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Opening of the Faculty of Economics, dated March 16, 2006. So when this Unesa has seven faculties.
